Duolingo! The New Way to Learn a Language!

Duolingo:

Learn a New Language

Free, Fun, and on Your Time!

Heading to a new country for study abroad? Just landed an EFL job because a clever copywriter convinced you it was a great idea? You know what’s actually a genius move?

Learning the language.

Not too long ago, learning a new language meant shelling out big bucks for dictionaries, pricey software, and endless memorization.

Now it is a hoot!

No, seriously—it’s a blast! With Duolingo, you learn at your own pace, anytime, and it’s completely FREE!

Let me show you around the app!

First, we have to log in!

The easiest way is to log in is through your Gmail.

So plop that username in!

I wonder whose email that is?  Maybe I should hire him!

Welcome to the home page, featuring your personalized learning path! If you're new to Duolingo, start by setting up your journey—choose from 40 available languages and dive in!

This year, my mission is to brush up on my German which is in desperate need of refurbishing! Here’s what my homepage looks like!

Next we start our lesson.  There are different types of exercises to work your brain in different ways.

Some exercises ask you to select the vowel, consonant, or complete word heard.

This  helps you practice your listening skills.

Others ask you to select the English meaning of the word expressed.

After completing your current level, the program increases the difficulty, adding new vocabulary or grammar to raise the bar and increase comprehension.

Upon the completion of your exercises for the day, the app directs you to review what you've learned and you are directed to your Guidebook which adds necessary context.  This helps solidify the information and ground it.

Necessary context, as well as differences from your native language is provided in your guidebook.

Once you have finished your ten or fifteen minutes for the day, you earn stars or points.  Nothing like gamifying your experience for a better language learning experience.

And there you have it!
